Repetition of traumatic experiences can occur on behavioral, emotional, physiologic, and neuroendocriniologic levels, but invariably causes suffering. In this 1989 article, Bessel van der Kolk describes the diversity of traumatic re-enactments, and addresses relationships to social attachment and separation, traumatic bonding, state-dependent learning, addiction to trauma, sex differences, and biological responses to trauma.
